Peapack-Gladstone, New Jersey

The population of Peapack-Gladstone is 2,245 and it's geographic size is 5.9 square miles. The origin of Peapack's name may derive from the original Native American town name in something near its original spelling. There is no one explanation, but here are a few possibilities:

Peapack:
1. Pe, "water", pack, "roots."
2. Translation of the Indian word to mean "marriage of water."
3. An Indian trail from the Raritan to the Musconetcong extended to the Minisink country. There was evidently a small Indian village along that trail that occupied the site of what is now known as Peapack. Prehaps the village was a place where water was located, where travelers on the trail could stop to rest and drink.

The origin of Gladstone:
1. A post office was established at the upper end of the village of Peapack when the railroads extened its line, therefore they needed to name the village.
2. Village acquired its name through actions of William Hillard, a local judge and farm owner. Hillard was an admirer of the honorable William E. Gladstone, the prime minister of Great Britain at the time. Hillard wrote to Gladstone asking premission to use his name. William E. Gladstone was a great admirer of the United States. Gladstone called the American constitution "the most remarkable work ever struck off at a given time by the brain and purpose of the man" and thought the US Senate "the most remarkable of all the inventions of modern politics."
